Product Description:
Amiloride, marketed under the trade name Midamor among others, is an oral potassium-sparing diuretic used to manage high blood pressure and edema associated with conditions such as heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or nephrotic syndrome. It is often prescribed in combination with other diuretics, such as thiazide or loop diuretics, to enhance fluid removal while minimizing potassium loss, which is a common side effect of many other diuretics.
Amiloride works by inhibiting sodium channels in the distal tubules of the kidneys, reducing sodium and water reabsorption while conserving potassium and hydrogen ions. The medication typically begins to take effect within about two hours of administration and maintains its action for approximately 24 hours, allowing for once-daily dosing in many cases.
By helping to regulate fluid balance and blood pressure, amiloride improves symptoms such as swelling and shortness of breath caused by fluid accumulation. Its potassium-sparing property makes it a valuable adjunct in combination therapies, preventing hypokalemia while effectively supporting cardiovascular and renal health. Amiloride remains an important therapeutic option for patients requiring careful fluid and electrolyte management.
