Product Description:
Carbachol, also known as carbamylcholine, is a cholinomimetic drug that acts by binding to and activating acetylcholine receptors, and is therefore classified as a direct-acting cholinergic agonist. It mimics the physiological action of acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors, producing controlled parasympathetic effects in ocular tissues. Due to its stability and longer duration of action compared to acetylcholine, carbachol is especially valuable in ophthalmic practice.
Carbachol is primarily used for ophthalmic indications, including the management of glaucoma and for inducing and maintaining miosis during eye surgeries such as cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation. By causing contraction of the iris sphincter muscle and ciliary body, it helps reduce intraocular pressure by enhancing aqueous humor outflow. This makes it an important agent in both surgical and postoperative settings.
The drug is generally administered as a sterile ophthalmic or intraocular solution and is used under controlled clinical conditions by trained ophthalmic professionals. It is marketed in several regulated markets under brand names such as Miostat, along with other manufacturer-specific brands. Owing to its predictable pharmacological action and effectiveness, carbachol remains a widely used and trusted medication in ophthalmology for surgical and therapeutic applications.
