Product Description:
Desogestrel is a synthetic progestin medication primarily used in hormonal contraception and the management of menopausal symptoms in women. It can be administered alone as a progestin-only pill (commonly known as a mini-pill) or in combination with an estrogen in oral contraceptives. As a hormone blocker, progesterone receptor agonist, and antiandrogen, Desogestrel works by preventing ovulation, altering cervical mucus, and modifying the uterine lining to prevent pregnancy. In combination with estrogens or testosterone, it is also used in the treatment of endometriosis and as a component of menopausal hormone therapy. Desogestrel is notable for its reduced androgenic activity compared to earlier-generation progestins, making it suitable for women who are sensitive to androgenic effects or breastfeeding. While primarily used as a female contraceptive, Desogestrel has been shown to suppress spermatogenesis and is being explored as a potential male contraceptive. Along with norethisterone, it is one of the only progestins widely used in progestin-only mini-pills, offering an effective and well-tolerated option for long-term hormonal contraception. Its versatility and favorable safety profile make Desogestrel a widely prescribed and trusted option in women’s health.
