Product Description:
Esmolol, also known as esmolol hydrochloride, is a rapid-acting, cardioselective β-1 adrenergic blocker administered intravenously. It is primarily used for the short-term management of supraventricular tachycardia, including rapid ventricular rates in patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, and hypertension associated with intubation. Due to its ultra-short half-life, esmolol provides rapid, controllable heart rate and blood pressure reduction, making it a preferred agent in emergency, perioperative, and postoperative settings.
Esmolol works by selectively blocking β-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart, which reduces heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output, while minimizing effects on the lungs and peripheral vasculature. Its quick onset and short duration allow precise titration for acute cardiac events and surgical procedures, including blood pressure control during anesthesia.
Beyond FDA-approved uses, esmolol is frequently used off-label for conditions such as aortic dissection, acute coronary syndrome, non-ST elevation myocardial infarction, sinus tachycardia, hypertensive emergencies, refractory ventricular tachycardia, and catecholamine response management during electroconvulsive therapy. Its predictable pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety profile make it an essential tool for clinicians managing acute tachycardia and related cardiovascular emergencies, while also allowing careful monitoring and rapid adjustment as needed.
