Product Description:
Fomepizole, also known as 4-methylpyrazole, is a critical care medication used primarily as an antidote for methanol and ethylene glycol poisoning. It is administered intravenously and can be used alone or in combination with hemodialysis in severe cases. Fomepizole works by inhibiting the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which prevents the conversion of methanol and ethylene glycol into their highly toxic metabolites, formic acid and oxalic acid, respectively. By blocking this metabolic pathway, fomepizole significantly reduces the risk of metabolic acidosis, organ damage, and other life-threatening complications associated with toxic alcohol ingestion.
The effectiveness of fomepizole is highest when administered promptly after ingestion, as delayed treatment allows harmful metabolites to accumulate in the body. It is typically used under strict medical supervision in emergency and hospital settings. Fomepizole is considered the first-line therapy for toxic alcohol poisoning due to its safety profile, predictable pharmacokinetics, and efficacy in preventing further tissue damage. Regular monitoring of renal function, acid-base balance, and serum alcohol levels is recommended during therapy to ensure optimal outcomes.
