Product Description:
Isavuconazonium sulfate is the sulfate ester form of isavuconazonium, a water-soluble prodrug of the triazole antifungal agent isavuconazole. Marketed under the brand name Cresemba, it is a systemic antifungal medication with broad-spectrum activity and is indicated for the treatment of invasive aspergillosis and invasive mucormycosis. It is administered either orally or intravenously under medical supervision.
Following administration, isavuconazonium sulfate is rapidly hydrolyzed by plasma esterases to release the active moiety, isavuconazole. Isavuconazole exerts its antifungal effect by binding to and inhibiting the fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase (CYP51), which is essential for the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol. Ergosterol is a critical component of the fungal cell membrane.
Inhibition of ergosterol synthesis results in disruption of fungal cell membrane integrity, increased membrane permeability, and leakage of essential intracellular components. This leads to fungal cell lysis and death. Isavuconazonium sulfate provides an effective therapeutic option for serious, life-threatening invasive fungal infections.
