Product Description:
Metaraminol, also known as metaradrine, is a sympathomimetic vasopressor medication widely used in critical care and anesthesia settings for the prevention and treatment of hypotension (low blood pressure). It is particularly effective in managing anesthesia-induced hypotension, shock, and acute circulatory failure where rapid blood pressure support is required. Metaraminol acts primarily by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors, leading to peripheral vasoconstriction and an increase in systemic vascular resistance, thereby restoring and maintaining adequate blood pressure.
Metaraminol is administered via intramuscular or intravenous routes, with intravenous use being most common in hospital environments. It can be given as a slow intravenous bolus or as a continuous infusion, typically through peripheral intravenous access under close monitoring. Clinically, bolus doses often range between 0.5 mg to 1 mg, depending on patient condition and response. The drug is commonly supplied as a 10 mg/1 mL injectable solution, which usually requires dilution before administration, often to a concentration such as 0.5 mg/mL. In many regulated markets, ready-to-use prefilled syringes for bolus administration are also available, improving safety and dosing accuracy in emergency situations.
