Product Description:
Methylergometrine, also known as methylergonovine, is an ergot alkaloid belonging to the ergoline class of compounds and is widely used in obstetrics as a potent uterotonic agent. It works by stimulating smooth muscle contraction, particularly in the uterus, leading to rapid and sustained uterine contractions. This action makes it highly effective in the prevention and management of postpartum hemorrhage, which is one of the leading causes of maternal complications after childbirth.
The drug is commonly administered after delivery to help reduce excessive bleeding, facilitate the expulsion of the placenta, and assist in clearing retained products of conception following miscarriage or abortion. It is available in multiple dosage forms including tablets, intramuscular and intravenous injections, and oral liquid formulations, allowing flexibility in clinical use depending on the severity of the condition.
In addition to its primary use in obstetrics, methylergometrine has also been studied for its effects on migraine due to its vasoconstrictive properties. It is generally well tolerated when used under medical supervision, although it must be used with caution in patients with hypertension or cardiovascular conditions due to its strong vasoconstrictive effects.
