Product Description:
Paromomycin sulfate is the sulfate salt form of paromomycin, a structural derivative of the aminoglycoside antibiotic neomycin. It exhibits both amebicidal and bactericidal activity, primarily targeting aerobic gram-negative bacteria. Paromomycin works by binding to the A site of the bacterial 30S ribosomal RNA, causing misreading of mRNA, premature termination of protein synthesis, and ultimately bacterial or parasitic cell death.
Paromomycin sulfate is used to treat a variety of parasitic infections, including amebiasis, giardiasis, leishmaniasis, and tapeworm infections. It is particularly valuable as a first-line treatment for amebiasis and giardiasis during pregnancy due to its safety profile. In other populations, it is typically considered a second-line therapy. The drug can be administered orally, applied topically to the skin, or given by intramuscular injection depending on the indication.
