Product Description:
Phenobarbital, also known as phenobarbitone, is a long-acting barbiturate medication widely used for its anticonvulsant and sedative properties. Marketed under the brand name Luminal and various generic equivalents, it is recognized by the World Health Organization as an essential medicine for the treatment of specific types of epilepsy, particularly in resource-limited and developing countries. In clinical practice, phenobarbital is commonly used to manage seizure disorders in infants and young children, while alternative therapies are often preferred for older pediatric and adult patients.
Phenobarbital can be administered orally, intramuscularly, or by slow intravenous infusion, depending on the clinical condition and urgency of treatment. Injectable forms are especially valuable in emergency settings, such as the management of status epilepticus when first-line therapies fail to produce adequate seizure control. Subcutaneous administration is not recommended.
Beyond epilepsy management, phenobarbital is used in selected cases for sedation, anxiety control, treatment of insomnia, and management of withdrawal symptoms associated with benzodiazepines and certain other drugs. It is also widely utilized in veterinary medicine. Following intravenous administration, onset of action occurs within minutes, while oral administration typically produces effects within thirty minutes, with a duration of action ranging from several hours to two days.
