Product Description:
Propylthiouracil is a well-established antithyroid medication used in the management of hyperthyroidism, including Graves’ disease and toxic multinodular goiter. It works by inhibiting thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme responsible for the synthesis of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), thereby reducing elevated hormone levels and helping control the symptoms of hyperthyroidism such as rapid heartbeat, weight loss, and anxiety. Propylthiouracil also inhibits the peripheral conversion of T4 to the more active T3, providing additional therapeutic benefit in thyrotoxic crises.
Propylthiouracil is particularly valuable in cases where methimazole, surgery, or radioactive iodine therapy is not suitable. In thyrotoxic crises, it is often preferred over methimazole due to its rapid onset and effectiveness. The drug is administered orally in tablet form, commonly in 50 mg and 100 mg strengths, and requires careful monitoring of thyroid function, liver enzymes, and blood counts during treatment to ensure safety.
With a well-characterized pharmacokinetic profile, propylthiouracil is rapidly absorbed and metabolized in the liver. It remains an essential option for managing severe hyperthyroidism, offering targeted thyroid hormone suppression and supporting safe and effective patient care in both routine and critical clinical settings.
