Product Description:
Selenious acid is an inorganic chemical compound widely used in metal surface treatment and finishing applications. One of its major industrial uses is in the protection and color modification of steel, particularly steel components used in firearms. In the cold-bluing process, selenious acid is combined with copper(II) nitrate and nitric acid to alter the surface color of steel from its natural silver-grey appearance to blue-grey or black. This process results in the formation of a copper selenide coating on the metal surface, which provides both decorative coloration and a degree of corrosion resistance. Unlike traditional hot-bluing methods that produce black iron oxide layers, cold bluing using selenious acid relies on a fundamentally different chemical reaction.
Selenious acid is also used for the chemical darkening and patination of non-ferrous metals such as copper, brass, and bronze. When applied, it produces a deep, rich brown surface finish that can be further enhanced through mechanical abrasion to achieve desired aesthetic effects. Due to these properties, selenious acid is valued in firearms manufacturing, metal restoration, decorative metalwork, and artistic patination processes.
