Product Description:
Succimer, also known as dimercaptosuccinic acid and sold under the brand name Chemet, is an oral chelating agent used for the treatment of heavy metal poisoning, including lead, mercury, and arsenic. It works by binding to toxic metals in the bloodstream, forming water-soluble complexes that are excreted through the urine, thereby reducing metal levels in the body.
Succimer is specifically indicated for the treatment of lead poisoning in children with blood lead levels above 45 μg/dL. It is not approved for the prevention of lead poisoning in cases of anticipated exposure. While preclinical studies suggest that dimercaptosuccinic acid can cross the blood–brain barrier in mice, its ability to reverse central nervous system damage in humans remains unclear. However, its chelating activity may help prevent further deterioration caused by continued exposure to heavy metals.
Succimer provides a safe and effective alternative to older chelation therapies, offering oral administration and a favorable safety profile. It is widely used in clinical settings for pediatric and adult patients with confirmed heavy metal toxicity.
