Product Description:
Tropicamide, marketed under the brand name Mydriacyl among others, is an antimuscarinic ophthalmic medication primarily used to dilate the pupil (mydriasis) and temporarily paralyze the ciliary muscle (cycloplegia) to facilitate comprehensive eye examinations. By blocking muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the iris sphincter and ciliary muscles, tropicamide allows clinicians to examine the lens, vitreous humor, and retina more clearly, aiding in the detection of ocular abnormalities.
Applied as eye drops, tropicamide acts rapidly, with effects beginning within approximately 15–40 minutes and lasting for 4–8 hours, making it ideal for routine dilated fundus examinations. Its relatively short duration of action ensures that vision typically returns to normal within a day. In addition to diagnostic use, tropicamide may be employed before or after eye surgery to maintain pupil dilation and assist in surgical procedures. It is also used in the management of anterior uveitis, helping reduce inflammation in the anterior chamber and preventing the formation of posterior synechiae.
Tropicamide is generally well tolerated, with minor side effects such as transient blurred vision, light sensitivity, or mild stinging upon application. Its rapid onset, predictable action, and safety profile make it one of the most widely used mydriatic and cycloplegic agents in clinical ophthalmology.
