Product Description:
Fluoxetine is an FDA-approved antidepressant widely used for the treatment of several psychological and mood disorders. It is indicated for major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and bipolar depression. In cases of treatment-resistant depression, fluoxetine can be combined with olanzapine for enhanced efficacy.
Fluoxetine works by selectively inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in presynaptic neurons, blocking the serotonin transporter protein and thereby increasing serotonin levels in the brain. This mechanism helps regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and improve emotional stability. The medication has well-documented off-label uses and must be administered according to recommended dosing guidelines. While generally well tolerated, fluoxetine may cause side effects such as nausea, headache, insomnia, and agitation. Careful monitoring is required in patients with comorbid conditions, and caution should be taken regarding contraindications and potential toxicity.
Fluoxetine remains a cornerstone therapy in both clinical and off-label psychiatric practice due to its efficacy, safety profile, and broad spectrum of indications.
