Product Description:
Sulindac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) belonging to the arylalkanoic acid class, used for the treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory conditions. It is commonly prescribed to manage pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with disorders such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, bursitis, and gouty arthritis. Sulindac is marketed under brand names such as Clinoril and Imbaral in various regions.
Sulindac functions as a prodrug that is converted in the body into its active sulfide metabolite by liver enzymes. This active form inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2, leading to reduced prostaglandin synthesis and decreased inflammation and pain. After activation, part of the drug is excreted into bile and reabsorbed from the intestine, which helps maintain more consistent blood levels. Some clinical data suggest that sulindac may be relatively less irritating to the stomach compared to several traditional NSAIDs, though gastrointestinal risk is still present. Due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, sulindac remains a useful option in long-term inflammatory disease management under medical supervision.
